Magan Ward tripwires email marketing

Curious if your freebie should really be free? Or how to begin to implement a tripwire and gain back some of the investment you may be running on ads.

If you’ve been around a minute or two, you know that email marketing is my thing. We often discuss email marketing providers, lead magnets and opt-ins, as well as self-liquidating offers.

You can read all about self-liquidating offers here. But if you aren’t quite ready to give up on the free opt-ins then a tripwire might be exactly what you need!

What is a tripwire?

A tripwire is the same concept of a low-ticket offer, but it is coordinated with your free opt-in and is a common practice that you may have come across when you have signed up for free opt-ins in the past.

Price tags placed on tripwires range from $7 – $47, and is another way to provide your subscriber with a low-risk investment and can help recoup some of your ad spend if you are spending money on running ads to your opt-in.

How does a tripwire work?

Typically the way a tripwire works is, once the subscriber hits the subscribe button on the free opt-in, instead of getting the Thank You for signing up message, they will be redirected to a new URL that offers this low ticket offer, and you usually see a timer for 15-30 minutes on it.

If timers feel like an icky marketing tactic to you, then you can 100% forgo this tactic, and just leave it as-is.

Just because the slimy marketing tactics celebpreneurs teach appear to work, doesn’t mean they are something that feels right to you, and that is important to keep in mind. Stay true to who you are and only do what feels right for you and your biz.

So if you aren’t ready to go all-in on a self-liquidating offer product suite (read about that here) then you might want to check out implementing a tripwire attached to your free opt-in.

Just remember, that what works for your business besties or mentors may not work best for you, so put your business needs first before jumping along with the next shiny thing. And it really depends on you, what you want to offer, and how you want to generate those leads to build that list.
